    This course aims to reflect the national occupational standard for controlling entry and arrangements at a confined space. It covers both water and non-water industry areas.

    Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

    Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

    Please be aware that the safe working load (SWL) of person & equipment combined during the practical session of this course is 136KG.


    The following SWL is applicable minus the equipment:

    6160-09 Medium Risk: 130KG.

    • Confined space classifications:
                       o Water industry national classifications
                       o National occupational standard
    • Risk assessment & workplace safety
    • Operation of a safe system of work
    • Standard protocols for work in medium risk confined spaces
    • Following a method statement
    • Use of permit to work control measures
    • Entry controller duties and responsibilities
    • Emergency planning
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Gas detection and ventilation
    • Hygiene and first aid
    • Escape sets and equipment checks and inspection
    • Traversing - simple vertical entry

    Assessment - Entry & Exit Procedures:
    • Practical observation - top entry no deeper than 3 metres
    • Undertaking dynamic risk assessments throughout the exercise to identify hazards
    • Responding to risks and hazards
    • Dealing promptly with emergencies

    Assessment - Entry Controller:
    • Practical observation - controlling pre-entry procedures and entry into and out of a confined space
    • Monitoring equipment readings
    • Raising the alarm and handing over to rescue teams during emergency situations
    • Maintaining communications with team members who are in confined spaces
    • 90 minute full written assessment

    This course is aimed at anyone working or preparing to work in a medium risk environment or those working as entry controller/top person controlling entry and arrangements for medium risk confined spaces. It includes entry controller duties, pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from a medium risk confined space, using equipment and tools safely, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.

    Additional Support:

    Any additional support (reader/scribe) must be pre-arranged and evidence submitted to City & Guilds before the start of the course – This cannot be done on the day
