    The aim of this course is to provide the knowledge and understanding of how to competently and safely carry out fire and smoke damper testing with inspection. This course will provide the necessary knowledge regarding the legislation that is in place relating to the maintenance of ventilation systems.

    • Appropriate knowledge of statutory Regulations relating to the maintenance of ventilation systems and safe working practices.
    • ACOP5 (41, 42 & 43) in relation to the Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992.

    - The Regulatory (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (for England & Wales)

    • Appropriate knowledge of industry standards, guidance & specifications in relation to ventilation system fire safety.
    • BESA DW 145 Guide to Good Practice For the Installation of Fire and Smoke Dampers.
    • BESA TR19 Guide to Good Practice – Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems.
    • BESA DW144 Specification for Sheet Metal Ductwork.
    • BESA DW172 Specification for Kitchen Ventilation Systems.
    • Fire code – Fire Safety in the NHS HTM 05-02: Guidance in support of functional provisions for healthcare premises.
    • BS EN 9999 Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings.
    • Understand the principles of Fire & Smoke damper devices and associated fire compartment barrier requirements.
    - Understand the basic principles of fire containment and building compartmentation for reducing fire spread.
    - Understand basic operating principles underpinning the release/activation of mechanical, electro-mechanical and passive fire damper systems.
    - Understand basic operating principles underpinning the release/activation of mechanical, electro-mechanical smoke damper systems.
    - Identify the potential fire safety hazards and adverse system performance in association with poor fire/smoke damper and ductwork cleanliness.

    • Understand how to interpret report findings and drawings.
